THE RANN

Project Type:

Barn Conversion

Date:

2023

Location:

Mellor

This project involved the conversion and sensitive extension of an existing barn, transforming it into a modest yet well-appointed two-bedroom home. The design approach sought to retain the agricultural character of the original structure while introducing contemporary elements that support comfortable modern living. Care was taken to preserve the barn’s proportions and rural presence, with the extension designed as a sympathetic addition that enhances the overall composition without overwhelming the original building.

Internally, the ground floor was reconfigured to create an open-plan living, kitchen and dining space that forms the heart of the home. Large openings and carefully considered glazing bring natural light into the space while maintaining views across the surrounding landscape. The ground floor also accommodates a study, providing a quiet workspace, along with a shower room and a welcoming entrance hall that sets the tone for the home’s understated, rural character.

The first floor contains two well-proportioned bedrooms and a family bathroom, making efficient use of the barn’s existing volume. The layout was developed to ensure comfortable head heights, practical circulation space and a balance between privacy and shared living areas. Throughout the project, materials and finishes were chosen to complement the existing fabric of the barn, celebrating its history while upgrading its performance and usability.

Overall, the barn conversion delivers a modest, characterful and sensitively designed home that respects the heritage of the original structure while providing a functional, modern living environment.
