EVERSONS BARN
Project Type:
Barn Conversion
Date:
2025
Location:
Simonstone
Evesons Barn is a carefully executed conversion of a long-standing, stone-built agricultural barn located on Simonstone Lane, immediately adjacent to a Grade II listed former farmhouse. Situated within a small group of established residential buildings on the edge of the Simonstone settlement boundary and within green belt land, the project demonstrates a sensitive and context-driven approach to rural building reuse.
The completed conversion retains the original footprint and volume of the existing barn, with no extensions added, preserving the scale and form that characterise its agricultural heritage. The design retains and reuses existing openings in the stone elevations, while a small number of modest new openings and rooflights have been introduced to meet modern residential needs. These changes were carefully arranged to maintain the barn’s solid, vernacular appearance - particularly when viewed from the southern approach along Simonstone Lane.
Internally, the layout provides a spacious family home arranged over two floors, comprising five bedrooms. The design works with the existing floor levels and structural features, such as original timber trusses, which have been preserved and expressed. Rooms were configured to ensure sufficient natural light, achieved through the considered use of existing window openings and discreetly placed conservation-style rooflights.
Externally, the barn has been repaired and repointed using reclaimed natural stone and lime mortar to match the original construction. The roof was re-covered in natural slate, and new rooflights were detailed with flush flashings and conservation bars. Painted timber windows are set within original stone surrounds, reinforcing the traditional character of the building.
A modern contrast was introduced on the south elevation, where previous rendered additions have been re-clad in vertical cedar timber boarding. Glazed openings in this area feature powder-coated aluminium frames, evoking the language of simple agricultural outbuildings and visually distinguishing the extension from the original barn structure.
Overall, the project delivers a high-quality family home that respects and observes the barn’s rural character, historical context, and setting within the green belt, while meeting the functional needs of contemporary living.
