This project proposed the construction of a single-storey, semi-subterranean summer house positioned to the rear of the main house. The design provided a sustainable, low-impact addition intended to enhance and extend the usability of the existing garden and outdoor living space.
The summer house architectural language is sympathetic to the main dwelling. It was constructed in concrete, with glazed elevations to the south that maximise solar gain while allowing the concrete structure to function as effective thermal mass. A green roof has been incorporated to improve thermal performance, encourage biodiversity, and visually blend the building into its landscaped surroundings. The roof design also included an overhang that provides passive shading during the warmest months, helping to mitigate the risk of overheating.
To ensure year-round comfort and enjoyment, the proposal included a floating log burner as a focal point and heat source. Additional planting was introduced at the homeowner’s discretion to further soften the building’s presence and integrate it naturally into the garden. Overall, the summer house offers a carefully considered, environmentally conscious enhancement to the property, providing a versatile and inviting space for relaxation throughout the seasons.
