WHALLEY OLD GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Project Type:
Conservation
Date:
2024
Location:
Whalley
The completed project at Whalley Old Grammar School involved the demolition of an outdated single-storey brick lean-to extension and the construction of a new stone-built extension in its place. Located on Station Road in Whalley, the building is a Grade II listed heritage asset, situated within the Whalley Conservation Area and forming part of the setting of the nearby Grade II listed War Memorial. The works were carried out with full consideration for the historical and architectural significance of the site.
The original extension on the east elevation was constructed from red brick with a corrugated roof. It was of poor quality, both aesthetically and functionally, offering inadequate insulation, restricted circulation, and a design that clashed with the character of the historic school building. Its removal and replacement were seen as an opportunity to enhance both the appearance and usability of the building, which continues to serve a wide range of community purposes.
The new extension has been built using stone to match the existing structure, ensuring a much more sympathetic addition to the historic architecture. The revised design includes smaller, more proportionate windows that reflect the scale and detailing of the original building, creating a more cohesive and respectful façade. A key element of the redesign was the incorporation of a flat roof infill within a recessed area, improving the overall roof pitch for the slate covering and allowing for practical access for future maintenance.
These improvements have not only enhanced the visual integrity of the building but also its usability. The extension now provides a more comfortable, accessible, and energy-efficient space for the various community groups that use the premises daily, including a pre-school, arts and educational classes, and evening group activities. The project has successfully balanced the need for modern functionality with the careful preservation of historic character, ensuring the continued sustainable use of this important community building.
