This completed project comprises a single-storey extension to the north-eastern side of a historic dwelling, designed to enhance family living while respecting the character and hierarchy of the original house. Positioned on an existing raised patio, the extension increases the footprint to create a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and sitting space that brings the family together within a light-filled, contemporary environment.
A glazed aluminium link forms a deliberate separation between the new extension and the existing gable, ensuring the addition remains visually and physically subservient to the host dwelling. This linking element avoids a direct, hard junction with the historic fabric while accommodating a new stair connection to the main house. The overall massing and composition are carefully considered to preserve the prominence of the original building.
Material choices reference the local vernacular, with stone facings and a grey slate roof complemented by large areas of contemporary glazing and aluminium-framed sliding doors. While visible from the main driveway, the extension is discreetly sited and screened to the north by an existing stone retaining wall, ensuring minimal wider visual impact.
The result is a sensitive yet contemporary addition that transforms everyday family life, providing a flexible, welcoming space that responds both to the heritage of the house and the needs of a young, growing family.
